Social Service Agencies and and the National Association of Social Workers Celebrate March as
National Social Work Month
BALTIMORE, MD – March 2, 2015 – Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR) and
social service agencies across the state recognize March as National Social Work Month.
The 2015 theme, “Social Work Paves the Way for Change,” was selected by the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW) to convey 60 years of professional progress.
DHR social workers make a difference in the day-to-day lives of countless Marylanders by
helping to build, support and empower positive family and community relationships. Partnering
with community organizations, DHR social workers are in schools helping students overcome
obstacles to their education; in hospitals helping patients navigate their paths; and in the local
department of social services helping protect vulnerable children and adults from abuse and
neglect.
Social workers—more than any other profession—recognize that more must be done to address
persistent social problems such as poverty, lack of education and health care access, and
discrimination based on gender, race, sexuality, or income. Social workers are society’s safety
net, providing vital resources and support to those who need it most.
If you’re looking to find a sense of purpose in your work, consider the countless possibilities of
the social work profession. Pursuing a career in social work provides infinite possibilities for your
career path. Check out DHR’s website for employment opportunities.
As Maryland’s social service agency, the Department of Human Resources administers child
welfare programs, including foster care and adoption, economic assistance programs and
distributes child support among other services and supports. During the last fiscal year, the
department estimates at least one million Marylanders used one or more of its services.
