Maryland Department of Human Services, Allegany County Department of Social Services, offers support following flash flooding in Western Maryland

Baltimore, MD — In response to severe flash flooding that impacted Western Maryland on May 13, the Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS)’s Allegany County Department of Social Services (ACDSS) are offering immediate assistance to those affected by the storm.

We are prepared to support Marylanders facing extended power outages, damaged homes, lost vehicles, and missed work caused by the disaster. Resources are available by calling or visiting your local Department of Social Services office or the Allegany County Disaster Recovery Center.

For agency support and direct referrals to community resources, call:

  • The Allegany County Department of Social Services at 301-784-7000 and/or
  • The Garrett County Department of Social Services at 301-533-3000.

This Saturday, May 17, we will open an ongoing Multiagency Community Resource Center in the Georges Creek area. The center will alternate between Lonaconing and Westernport at the following locations:

  • From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the Lonaconing Armory.
  • From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Wednesday at the Bruce Outreach Center in Westerport.

Agency staff are prepared to help Marylanders receive emergency and ongoing support, such as food assistance, cash support, child welfare, and energy assistance. They can also help individuals obtain identification, birth certificates, and transportation vouchers.

Maryland households enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible for replacement benefits to cover food spoiled by water or power outages resulting from severe weather that affected Western Maryland on May 13, 2025. If you’re a SNAP customer who lost food during the flood or power outage, call 301-784-7000 for help.

“Our dedicated staff, several of whom have been personally impacted, are working around the clock to connect families with essential resources,” said Courtney Thomas-Winterberg, director of the ACDSS. “As our community begins clean-up efforts, we are here to support our neighbors in any way we can.”
