FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cumberland, Md. (September 22, 2014) – Allegany and Washington County residents impacted by the extreme flooding that took place June 12, 2014, have until September 29, 2014 to apply for state and federal disaster relief aid.

“More than 100 individuals and families have already applied for financial grants made available by the state. If you were impacted by the storms and haven’t yet contacted us, I urge you to apply this week,” said Department of Human Resources Secretary Ted Dallas.

Impacted residents who apply may receive up to $5,000 in assistance to pay expenses for temporary housing, medical needs (including mental health and dental needs), moving and storage, personal property (including clothing, essential tools and equipment and vehicle damage), and emergency housing. Residents also may be eligible for federal aid through the SBA Disaster Loan program.

A DHR case manager is available to assist residents with the State Other Needs Assistance application process at the Allegany County Department of Social Services (1 Frederick St., Cumberland, MD 21501) beginning Tuesday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 25, from 8:00 am. – 4:30 p.m. Residents should bring paperwork to document their storm expenses.

Applicants may also call 855-769-5779, the State Other Needs Assistance hotline, to apply for assistance or ask questions about the application process.

For more information on this grant opportunity, residents may also visit the DHR Website at http://www.dhr.maryland.gov.
